Contexte historique:

Le jeune lion « Roscoe » était l'animal de compagnie du 1er. Bataillon du 28e régiment de la 5e division de marine américaine. Les soldats emmenaient « Roscoe » avec eux partout où ils allaient... :

Quelques Marines (probablement pas sobres) l'ont acheté comme chiot pour 25 $ à Griffith Park, le zoo de Los Angeles... :

Il était également présent lors du massacre sanglant autour de l'île du Pacifique d'Iwo Jima, où ce même régiment de Marines a pris le "Mont Suribachi" et a hissé le drapeau américain... :
